An Ontario judge has decided that the teen accused in the death of Const. Garrett Styles will be tried for manslaughter instead of first-degree murder, his lawyer David Berg tells CityNews.
The teen, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is expected to go on trial next year, he says.
The Crown is reportedly appealing the decision, but calls to the Newmarket Crown attorney’s office weren’t immediately returned.
Styles, 32, died after being dragged and pinned under a van in East Gwillimbury in June 2011 during a routine traffic stop.
The teen, who was injured in the crash and 15 at the time, is a quadriplegic, Berg said.
