Teen charged in Const. Garrett Styles’ death in court Monday

The teenage boy charged with first-degree murder in the death of York Regional Police Const. Garrett Styles is in a Newmarket court.

Styles, 32, was killed during a routine traffic stop on June 28, 2011, after pulling over a minivan in East Gwillimbury, Ont.

Authorities allege the boy, who was the driver, suddenly accelerated, dragging Styles and pinning him under the vehicle. Styles later died in hospital.

The boy was 15 years old at the time of Styles’ death. He is 16 years old now.

The teen’s lawyer said his client, who is in a wheelchair after being paralyzed in the incident, will not have to sit through the entire preliminary inquiry that began Monday.

The case is under a publication ban and the boy’s identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
