The funeral for a Peel police officer who died following a car accident in Brampton earlier this week will be held at Mississauga’s Hershey Centre.

Const. Artem (James) Ochakovsky died in hospital Tuesday evening after he suffered a critical head injury in a crash at Airport Road and Steeles around 11pm Monday. He was on his way to assist a colleague on a non-emergency call when he became involved in a collision with another car. His cruiser ended up wrapped around a hydro pole.

The 36-year-old leaves behind his wife Erin and three-year-old son Owen.

The investigation into the accident could take weeks, and so far, no charges have been laid. The 22-year-old driver of the other vehicle suffered a minor injury and was later released from hospital.

Peel Police Chief Mike Metcalf described Ochakovsky, who joined the force in 2008, as the “ideal recruit”.

Ochakovsky’s funeral will take place on Tuesday at 1pm at the Hershey Centre. Books of condolence are available for the public to leave messages of sympathy and support at the following locations:

  • 11 Division – located at 3030 Erin Mills Parkway, Mississauga
  • 12 Division – located at 4600 Dixie Road, Mississauga
  • 21 Division – located at 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton

  • Airport Division – located at 2951 Convair Drive, Mississauga
  • Emil V. Kolb Centre for Police Excellence – located at 180 Derry Road, Mississauga

You can also leave messages of condolence online.

A trust fund has been established for Ochakovsky’s family. Donations can be made at any TD Canada Trust branch. Cheques or money orders should be made out to “In Trust for the Family of James Ochakovsky”.
